New mobile application to locate volunteering opportunities

+U is the name of a new free mobile phone application that will match users with local volunteering opportunities from the Do-it database. This app is produced by the volunteering charity YouthNet in collaboration with the electronics giant Sony and provides a database of over a million volunteering opportunities with 28,000 organisations across the UK.

Youth Volunteering Training

Tuesday 10th May 
 

More and more voluntary and community groups are beginning to involve young people as volunteers. This session will look at ways to engage with young people and ensure good practice. We will look at how organisations can reduce barriers and difficulties faced by young volunteers and explore the good practice issues that need to be in place. The session will consider appropriate ways to aid recruitment and the continued involvement of young people as volunteers.

Volunteer Drop In

Volunteering Northumberland are holding a joint volunteering and employment advice drop-in with the REACH project on Tuesday 1st February, 9 - 12, at the Swan Centre for Leisure in Tweedmouth. Everyone welcome! The drop-ins will continue to be run every Tuesday in February and March.

Health Volunteering Fund.

The Department of Health is launching a new Volunteer Fund, to support health volunteering.  There are two  2 distinct grant funding schemes: a local grant scheme aimed at supporting volunteering in health and social care and a national portfolio scheme for national organisations invited to apply for more substantial awards or to deliver more strategic or developmental programmes.  Applications for the fund will open in January 2010 with the first round being for local projects, followed by a second round later in the year which will support a national scheme.

New Charter Aims To Strengthen Ties Between Volunteers And Staff.

The TUC and Volunteering England signed a Volunteers’ Charter in December to strengthen ties between paid staff and volunteers.

£8m Volunteer Brokerage Plan 'Will Miss Target'.

DWP says fewer people will take up placements than expected.

The Department for Work and Pensions has concluded that the £8m volunteer brokerage scheme, which matches jobseekers with volunteering placements, is unlikely to meet its original target. The DWP's latest figures show that 4,710 people took up places under the scheme, which is being run by volunteering charities BTCV, CSV, Volunteering England and v, in its first six months. Its target was to match 40,000 people with placements in two years.
