This year marks the 25th Anniversary of Volunteers’ Week. The week is an opportunity to recognise the achievements of volunteers and thank them for their contribution to the local community.
The Volunteer Centre will be celebrating this landmark through our annual Thank You event and Awards Evening, which is taking place at Longhirst Hall, Morpeth on Wednesday 3rd June, where volunteers registered with the Volunteer Centre are invited along to a champagne reception and an evening of entertainment.
To help celebrate the activities of volunteers throughout Northumberland, the Volunteer Centre would like to offer organisations the opportunity to nominate volunteers for the following categories: Lifetime Achievement Award, Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer Group of the Year and Young Volunteer of the Year (volunteers under the age of 25). If you are working with any groups or individuals who you feel may like to attend on the night, or if you know of anyone who could be nominated/would like to nominate someone, please let us know.
More details will follow soon.

The Safer Care Accredited Training Course is a series of inter-related workshops, developed by Northumbria Youth and funded by Children’s Workforce development Council (CWDC). The VoiCeS Safeguarding Project has funded a limited number of places through CWDC. Participants will gain the underpinning knowledge required to enable them to deliver services to children and young people safely and leave with a tool-kit that will support their group to create policies and procedures which will relate to their needs and requirements. With a little additional work, you will also have the opportunity to gain accreditation at level 2 through the Open College Network (OCN) but it is not compulsory.
Participants would need to make a commitment to attend all of the inter-related sessions; consisting of a 2 hour induction to the course and four days, 9.30am – 3.30pm tutored sessions. For the participants choosing to have their work accredited with OCN they would need to do some home study, put a portfolio of evidence together, and attend an additional portfolio support session.
The training will be of particular interest and benefit to community groups operating with no or limited paid staff. I would strongly encourage Management Committee Members/Trustees to consider attending the course as they may find the legal aspects relating to the course content of particular interest.

Wansbeck Community Festival forms a key part of a programme of community events called 'Wansbeck Celebrates! March 2009'. Following the forthcoming move to one local authority in Northumberland and the end of Wansbeck District Council in March 2009, the council decided to programme and support a series of community activities and events. The aim of these events is to celebrate the unique culture and heritage of the area and to showcase the creative talents within communities.
This festival highlights some of the many community groups and talent that Wansbeck has to offer. There's a varied programme of music, dance, sport and art activities. There's marquees filled with stall holders, kite displays, photo exhibitions and film screenings in the Institute, and much, much more. There really is something for all the family.
The day’s timetable of activities include:
The Performance Marquee will showcase some of the amazing creative talent that can be found in the District, including bands supported by the Volunteer Centre’s very own ‘loud love’ live music project.
Other performances take place throughout the day.
To celebrate International Women's Day, a free Women's Community Event will be held at the North Seaton Community Centre on Monday 9th March
The all day event includes manicures, pottery painting and flower arranging, and taster sessions of Tai Chi and Tribal Dancing.

The DNEX Exhibition is the North's largest independent living event and is taking place at the Metro Arena in Newcastle on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 October 2008.
Sponsored by Unity Trust Bank and Liveasy the event provides information, equipment and advice for both disabled and older people. So if you, or if you know someone, who has an interest in independent living, equipment, adaptations and services why not come along and be part of the biggest and best independent lifestyle event in the North East this year.
DNEX attracts over 5,000 visitors and there is something for everyone at this year's event including over 100 stands and an exciting programme of seminars and workshops.
Thanks to the support of the Percy Hedley Foundation DNEX 2008 will feature a fashion show and also performances by The Lawnmowers (a group of disabled actors who will be performing two half hour shows) and the Signed Singers who will be signing some of your favourite songs.
Doors are open from 9.30am to 5.00pm on both days. Admission and car parking is free, and there is also a free shuttle bus from the Arena car park to the main entrance. To help with access to the event one of the sponsors Liveasy will provide the Mobility Loan where wheelchairs can be ‘borrowed' for the duration of the visit.
Terry Mallon, CEO, commented: ‘Disability North employs therapists, information officers and advisors who are experienced in dealing with enquiries relating to independent living. We all consider the exhibition to be an extension of what we offer as an organisation, not only is it our biggest fundraiser of the year, it is also a way of publicising the impressive services we provide to disabled people, their carers, families and friends as well as health and social care employees.'
If you would like any further information on the exhibition contact Joyce on 0191 284 0480 or e-mail events@disabilitynorth.org.uk and place ‘DNEX2008' in the subject box.
Disability North is a user led regional charity.
30 October 2008 will see the first ever Voluntary Community Sector Awards for the North East region. The awards are designed to recognise the work of individuals and voluntary and community sector organisations from across the region, in helping to develop our communities.
They will cover a wide variety of areas and activities, and will include:
These awards can be made to any voluntary and community sector groups or individuals working in the North East region. We all know of organisations which do fantastic work, whether they provide a local gardening scheme or a region-wide training service, day-care for the elderly, or advocacy and support. It doesn't matter whether you work in a specific neighbourhood or across the whole region, there is an award designed to recognise and celebrate what you've given to the community.
We would like to recognise the contributions made by those who act on behalf of the voluntary and community sector, so will be making a special awards for:
Anyone can make a nomination for an award. People or organisations can make as many nominations as they like, and can nominate their own staff and volunteers for individual awards, but cannot nominate themselves for an organisational or project award.
Go to www.vonne.org.uk/awards for a nomination guide and form and return it to VONNE's offices by 5pm on Tuesday 30 September. Look out for leaflets and posters coming through the post to VONNE members soon.
A small judging panel has been drawn together to decide who will receive the awards, including representatives from regional and local organisations, volunteering groups and public sector partners.
Here's your chance to win £50 for your group, club or organisation.
The South Northumberland Radio Group hopes to establish a genuinely accessible community radio station to serve the area. The station will be available for you to promote your services and activities.
To help them assess demand for the station, they need to find out if the community is interested in such a project. Just complete the short survey, by clicking on the link below and you will be automatically entered into the £50 prize winning draw.
Just go to www.snrgroup.co.uk and follow the directions on the home page.
