Giving More People A Say In Local Spending – What Would You Spend £60,000 On?
A new and innovative way of distributing public funds has arrived in Wansbeck that puts the decision making on where and what is spent in the hands of local people. This is called Participatory Budgeting, but don't be put off by the name, the idea behind it is quite simple.
Often called the ‘People's' or ‘U-Decide' fund the process is about engaging residents, groups and other partners in discussions about spending priorities, making spending proposals and eventually voting on them at special ‘Decision Day' events. £60.000 is being made available in Wansbeck for Participatory Budgeting and Wansbeck's own voting decision day will take place later in the year.
To assist with the planning for this event everyone is being asked to decide the themes and activities where they think money should be spent. This will also help people to think about ideas and projects for bidding into the Participatory Budgeting pot at a later date.

Youth Participation Funding
‘eVolve – Young People Volunteering', part of the Volunteer Centre, is inviting applications for grants up to £1,500 for any organisation or youth group in the Wansbeck area, with the aim being to widen participation and volunteering within them by anyone under the age of 25.
The funding can be for any activity or equipment that could be used to increase membership, participation or volunteering i.e. funding could be used to buy DJ equipment as long as the aim will be to enable more people to access it, or to train more people within the group how to use it.
Applications should be submitted by the young people who are members of the group. The applications go to our grants panel, made up of local young people, who assess them and decide on the outcome. A number of grants have already been given out, and the panel meets on a monthly basis.
